The First Lady on International Child Abduction

Laura Bush at the International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children Conference

Elysée Palace,Paris, France - January 17th, 2007

International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children Conference

"The United States made missing and exploited children a priority in 1981"

First Lady Laura Bush of the United States of America January 2007

I recently came across this press release issued by the Whitehouse press center after the First Lady of America, Laura Bush addressed an international conference hosted in Paris, France by President Chirac.

I agree wholeheartedly with Mrs Bush's sentiments but I do have serious issues with the gap between words and deeds. There is a call for greater foreign government cooperation
Every country must educate its citizens, especially women and children, so they can avoid this degradation
however very scant attention is paid to the void that exists for parents who have children abducted to America or from America.

International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children Conference Paris France

In the pecking order of priorities it is clear that international child abduction ranks extremely low, not only for local agencies and law enforcement but at the Whitehouse.

The majority of Mrs Bush's address dealt with the international issue of child pornography and the growing international response to dealing with perpetrators of this heinous crime.

Let's put this in perspective - international child abduction-v-international child pornography - I cannot disagree that child pornography must be tackled and must receive a higher priority than international child abduction and I write as a parent who's child has been taken across international boundaries and given into the care of a convicted pedophile.

When I found that Emily Rose was being "adopted" in Wisconsin in April 2003 I was staggered and frightened however when I found that this was happening from a convicted pedophile who advised me his son was adopting Emily Rose and he (the pedophile) had also been looking after her, I was terrified beyond anything I have ever experienced in my existence on this planet.

What I feel needs to be done is to educate senior leaders in America, Europe and around the world that international child abduction needs more attention too, not allowed to be an also ran that is disposed of rather than dealt with. Mrs Bush does not seem so far away from that sentiment as she goes on to state:

"A society shows its character in the way it treats its most vulnerable citizens. Each of us can help protect children in our societies, and every country must help protect children in our global society."

Mrs Bush, if you ever get to read this - salut as President Chirac would say, but please do not forget to mention the thousands of children who are internationaly abducted and at great risk as a consequence next time you have the opportunity and I write as a parent who's child taken to America, has been allowed to go blind.

Episode 146: Where Is Emily Now?

Special Guest Interview: Karl Hindle

Karl's baby girl Emily vanished, along with the girl's mother, who took Emily in January 2003. Since then, Karl has been trying to find little Emily Rose Hindle, pictured here. She has been moved by her mother at least 40 times, through 10 U.S. States.

Karl has spent over 3 years searching for Emily, and he has sold everything he owns to try and get Emily back.

She is going blind. If Emily isn't found soon, and given medical attention for a serious eye problem, the damage will be irreversible.

Karl's search for Emily is a story of international child abudction, a U.S. State Department cover-up, and involvement of a known sex offender in a plot to illegally adopt Emily.

Where is my daughter right now ?

At the end of June, Judge Doyle in Volusia County Court, FL gave the mother Sheila Fuith, permission to relocate to Panama City in Florida on two conditions - first, that I was given an address for where she was staying with Emily and secondly, I was given a telephone number.

Sheila has advised her attorney, Kim Bannister of Central Florida Legal Services, Daytona Beach that her family refuse to allow her to give out a telephone number.

Right now I want to know where Emily is and get our telephonic contact as ordered by Judge Doyle - since I departed Florida, there has been no contact whatsoever.

Sheila also did NOT take Emily to Shand Medical Centre in Gainesville for a further medical opinion on her eye condition - the TENTH such examination - just how many do you need before the US agencies get this through their collectively thick skulls - Emily is GOING BLIND !

Florida DCF - Paedophiles and Protective Custody - supported by the State Department ?

I reported Emily's medical neglect to Florida's Department of Children & Families in April 2004 and the case was assigned to Investigator Roberta Miranda of the DeLand office.

I was asked to submit any documentation I had in connection with Emily's medical condition and other paperwork relevant to the concerns for Emily's care and welfare.

I provided Investigator Miranda with copies of the private investigators report concerning Emily's contact with Leslie Merriam - a convicted child sex offender and a lifetime registrant on the Wisconsin Sex Offenders Register. Emily was in the care of this paedophile as a consequence of her mothers attempt to have her unlawfully adopted by Dale Merriam and his wife, Shannon Bodin in Wisconsin.

"All I can say is that there was going to be no paper work and no money changing hands. That Emily was going to be given over to my son."

Investigator Miranda then advised me that children being given to other people to care for them is a common practice in the US and that Emily being in the care of this paedophile and his family was PROTECTIVE CUSTODY ARRANGEMENT.

The DCF file of Investigator Miranda is in my posession - I am unable to publish the file as that is a violation of law however the file cites Barbara Grieg of the State Department once more involved in the matter and the final report states

Mother has the support of the State Department.

As a responsible, loving caring parent I would not allow a convicted paedophile to look after a child, certainly not one of mine - placing Emily into the care of a CONVICTED PAEDOPHILE is more properly called CHILD ENDANGERMENT not protective custody.

What does Sheila Fuith, Emily's mother have to say about this ?

Emily's Eye Condition - Blindness unless treated

When Emily was 5 months old, our pediatrician noted that her eyes appeared slightly cross eyed - her right eye turned inwards in what is known as esotropia.

Now this was nothing in itself, this condition is seen in many children but it is a warning flag for a doctor to make further examinations and this is exactly what happened - we were referred to Dr Bell, the senior opthamologist at the county hospital in Essex UK.

After several weeks of testing, examinations and consultation by a team of medical eye specialists the diagnosis was produced when Emily was 6 months old. The news shocked both Sheila and myself - Emily was severely vision impaired in her right eye and in all likelihood was blind but we couldn't be sure as she was so young. The good news was that we had caught the condition very early and the prognosis for recovery was good.

I carried Emily out of the hospital in her carry chair with one hand, and her mother, Sheila, with the other - both of us were in tears.

Emily was diagnosed with an "amblyopia" as the cause of her vision problems and we embarked on a regimen of "patching therapy" to treat Emily's blind eye which entailed weekly visits to Broomfield Hospital where Emily was treated by the team of eye specialists tasked with her care - these included Dr McCabe, Dr Jackson, Dr Omi and Dr Bell among others.

Surgery was considered to correct the alignment of her eye but this in itself will do nothing for her poor vision - left to itself the eye will not improve and it will degenerate until Emily is blind in the eye completely.

We treated Emily for 5 months in England until Sheila took Emily to the United States in February 2003. As soon as Emily was in the US, Sheila claimed that the eye problem was "no big deal" it was just a lazy eye and nothing serious was wrong. At other times Sheila has claimed she was getting Emily medical treatment, that Emily had been cured and that she had no money for medical treatment.
